Cast your mind back to the 1st December last year… With thoughts of Christmas approaching; nights getting colder, wetter and darker; the doors to Derby Churches Nightshelter opened once more for the fourth year. With over 300 volunteers at hand, things were very busy from the start. A record 20 guests stayed on the first night; in previous years this figure has been in single figures or in the low teens. This meant we had to be on the ball from the outset!

Once again, our amazing volunteering team sprang into action showing the love of Jesus in a very practical way. 1000’s of hot meals and drinks were lovingly prepared with compassion and care. With smiles on faces, volunteers reached out and gave a listening ear in a non judgemental envi-ronment and blessed guests with huge amounts of welcomed prayer. Time after time, we witnessed miracles due to prayer. Guests whose situations seemed very bleak and dark were soon turned around; benefits suddenly available to guests even though eligibility had been questioned; guests, who had refused to engage and accept help, suddenly heading back to home countries or moving into accommodation! Not only did we see transformation in situations, we saw physical transformation too. A local hairdresser offered up her skills and time to provide free haircuts and beard trims at one of our venues. Although many felt self-conscious, perhaps as a result of not having care and attention bestowed upon them, the look of liberation and pride as they saw their ‘new self’ in the mirror was priceless and God given.

265 guests accessed the nightshelter this winter and only two didn’t have a more permanent solution at the end.

We continue to support them as best we can - we never give up on anyone! There is no way we could have done all this without you; without your time, prayer, financial support and interest so
