FOOTWASHING IN THE CITY
“Foot washing for me is a very intrinsic part of my Christian life, it’s a beautiful and humbling experience” - Janice Cooper Volunteer
Under the umbrella of Derby Churches Nightshelter [Derby City Mission], a number of women are volunteering their time and support to a new service and ministry to homeless women in the city.
“Foot Washing Church takes place in a truly tranquil house in the city. The doors open weekly for homeless ladies to come and simply be our pampered guests” explains Janice Cooper, one of the volunteers supporting this new ministry.
Alongside her volunteering twice a month at one of the Nightshelter venues, she was honoured to be asked to be part of a new team in October 2016 when volunteering training commenced.
“For the foot washing, there are foot spas where our guests can place their feet in total comfort and privacy. At their request, we offer nail polishing and can arrange for hairdressers to cut and colour their hair too! An amazing gift with God behind us all the way.”
Owned by the Derby Methodist Circuit and named after the mother of John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism, Susanna Wesley House seeks to provide a home of hospitality and prayer encouraging the expression of faith and spirituality through creative arts.
Foot Washing Church is a comfortable, warm, prayerful place where the ladies can come and be themselves. They are offered a private shower, clean clothing and they can leave their clothes to be washed, dried and ironed. Just as Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as a demonstration of His humility and His servanthood, washing feet today can be seen as a symbol of our role as Christians to follow His example.
